Angeles National Golf Club

Los Angeles, California

Public Course · 18 Holes · Par 72 · 7,016 yds · $80–$150 · 4.3

A Jack Nicklaus design in the San Fernando Valley foothills, Angeles National offers a challenging, well-conditioned public golf experience with dramatic views of the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains.

History & Heritage

Angeles National Golf Club opened in 2004, designed by Jack Nicklaus in the San Fernando Valley foothills of Sunland, California. It was Nicklaus's first public-access course in the greater Los Angeles area, built on former movie ranch land surrounded by the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains.

The course was originally envisioned as a high-end daily-fee facility to bring Nicklaus-caliber design to public golfers in LA. At 7,016 yards from the tips with dramatic canyon crossings and mountain views, it quickly established itself as one of the most challenging and scenic public courses in Southern California.

The layout takes full advantage of the foothill terrain, routing holes through natural canyons with significant elevation changes. The Angeles National Forest provides an unspoiled backdrop that feels miles removed from urban Los Angeles despite being just 30 minutes from downtown.

Signature Holes

15
Hole 15 Par 3 · 195 yards

A dramatic downhill par 3 with a forced carry over a canyon to a well-bunkered green. The San Gabriel Mountains provide a stunning backdrop. One of the most photographed holes on the course — take less club due to the elevation drop.

18
Hole 18 Par 5 · 555 yards

A risk-reward finishing par 5 with water guarding the approach to the green. Reachable in two for long hitters willing to carry the hazard, but a smart layup leaves a manageable wedge to close the round.

What to Expect

Angeles National plays through dramatic foothill terrain with canyon crossings, significant elevation changes, and mountain views throughout. The Angeles National Forest surrounds the course, creating an unspoiled natural setting that feels far from LA despite being 30 minutes from downtown.

Nicklaus designed the course with his trademark strategic choices off the tee — multiple routes on most holes that reward smart course management. The fairways are generous but the approaches demand precision, particularly on the canyon holes with forced carries.

Conditions are consistently strong for a high-volume public course. The mountain setting means temperatures can be 5-10 degrees cooler than the valley floor — welcome relief in summer.

Playing Tips

Canyon holes require confident forced carries. Know your distances honestly and don't get caught between clubs — commit to the shot.

The mountain elevation and dry air can add distance to shots. Factor this in, especially on the downhill par 3s.

Nicklaus provides multiple routes on most holes. On first visits, play the conservative line until you learn where the fairway bunkers and canyon edges are.

The back nine is significantly more demanding than the front. Save some energy and concentration for the stretch run.

Morning tee times offer the best conditions — afternoon winds can pick up in the foothill canyons.
