Blackwolf Run - River Course
Kohler, Wisconsin
Pete Dye's original Kohler course, the River Course at Blackwolf Run winds through dramatic glacial terrain along the Sheboygan River. The layout features Dye's trademark visual intimidation with plunging ravines, island fairways, and some of the most dramatic inland holes in Wisconsin.
History & Heritage
Blackwolf Run\'s River Course was designed by Pete Dye in 1988 as the flagship course at the Kohler resort complex. Dye said the course "wasn\'t built but found," carved from glacial runoff creating the Sheboygan River Valley. Plays 7,404 yards from the back tees.
Consistently ranked among America\'s top resort courses. Part of the Destination Kohler complex with the Meadow Valleys course and the 10-hole par-3 Baths course (Chris Lutzke, 2021). Holes from River and Meadow Valleys were combined for the 2012 U.S. Women\'s Open.
Signature Holes
One of multiple holes tracing the Sheboygan River through deep ravines. Dye\'s mastery of dramatic terrain is on full display — railroad ties, optical illusions, and the river itself all come into play.
What to Expect
Pete Dye at his most diabolical — demanding from the first tee to the final approach. Dramatic elevation changes, deep river ravines, railroad ties, and optical illusions. The natural glacial terrain does much of the work.
Resort at $175-325 — among the top resort courses in America.
Playing Tips
Course management is everything. The river and ravines punish wayward shots severely.
Club selection on par 3s is critical given elevation changes. Play from appropriate tees — the back markers are brutally long.
