Blue Mound Golf & Country Club
Wauwatosa, Wisconsin
A Seth Raynor design in Wauwatosa, Blue Mound is one of the finest private clubs in Wisconsin. The classic template-hole layout features Raynor's signature Redan, Alps, and Biarritz holes on gently rolling terrain, creating one of the purest expressions of Raynor's architectural philosophy in the Midwest.
History & Heritage
Blue Mound was designed by Seth Raynor in 1926 — widely considered to have the best and most complete set of template holes among all Raynor courses. Additional work over the years by Donald Ross, Tom Bendelow, and Willie Anderson adds to the architectural pedigree.
The opening three holes deliver a Redan (1st), Double Plateau (2nd), and Biarritz (3rd) in rapid succession. The full catalog includes Alps, Road, Short, Punchbowl, Hog\'s Back, Eden, and Long templates — each hole named after its template.
Signature Holes
The Biarritz — a 220-yard par 3 with the distinctive deep swale bisecting the green. Part of the opening Redan-Double Plateau-Biarritz sequence that announces the course\'s template pedigree immediately.
What to Expect
A complete catalog of Raynor/Macdonald template holes — Redan, Biarritz, Alps, Road, Short, Punchbowl, Eden, and more. Bold, contoured green complexes are the stars. A pilgrimage site for golf architecture enthusiasts.
Strictly private — one of Wisconsin\'s finest clubs in Wauwatosa.
Playing Tips
Understanding template concepts helps enormously. Redan greens reject right; Biarritz demands distance control over the swale; Alps requires a blind approach.
Study green shapes — they follow predictable template logic once you understand the patterns.
