BraeBurn Country Club
Houston, Texas
Founded in 1926 with ties to golf royalty — Jackie Burke Sr. was a founder and Jimmy Demaret served as head professional. Golden Age architect John Bredemus designed the original layout, and Tripp Davis completed a nationally recognized renovation in 2022.
History & Heritage
BraeBurn Country Club was originally founded in 1926 as Colonial Country Club on the southwestern edge of downtown Houston. The course was designed by John Bredemus, often called the Father of Texas Golf, who was one of the most influential Golden Age architects in the state. The club was renamed BraeBurn Country Club in 1931.
The club boasts remarkable connections to golf royalty. Jackie Burke Sr., father of Masters and PGA Championship winner Jackie Burke Jr., was among the club's founders. The legendary Jimmy Demaret, a three-time Masters champion, served as head professional at BraeBurn early in his career before going on to co-found Champions Golf Club with Jackie Burke Jr.
Carlton Gipson redesigned the layout in 1991 to address flooding and modernize the course. In 2022, Tripp Davis and Associates completed a comprehensive restoration and renovation that earned national recognition, returning the course to its Golden Age roots while incorporating modern turf and drainage improvements.
Signature Holes
A strategic par 4 that showcases the Tripp Davis renovation with restored Golden Age bunkering and a green complex that rewards precise approach play.
A demanding par 3 over water to a well-bunkered green. The hole exemplifies Bredemus's original vision restored through the 2022 renovation.
A risk-reward par 5 with strategic options off the tee. Long hitters can reach in two, but water and bunkering punish aggressive misses.
A strong finishing hole that demands accuracy off the tee and a precise approach to a well-defended green, providing a fitting conclusion to the round.
What to Expect
BraeBurn is a classic Houston parkland course with mature trees lining the fairways and water features integrated throughout. The 2022 Tripp Davis renovation restored Golden Age character with authentic bunkering styles while modernizing drainage and playing surfaces. At 6,808 yards from the tips, the course rewards accuracy and course management over raw distance.
The club exudes Houston golf history at every turn, from the Bredemus routing to the legacy of Demaret and Burke. Conditioning is excellent following the renovation.
Playing Tips
BraeBurn rewards players who keep the ball in the fairway. The restored bunkering is both visually impressive and strategically demanding. Missing greens in the wrong bunker makes up-and-down challenging.
The Bermuda greens are firm and can be fast, especially in summer. Approach shots that land short and run onto the putting surface are often more effective than high shots that may release off the back.
