A Tom Fazio design in the lush Baltimore-Washington corridor, Caves Valley hosted the 2021 BMW Championship. The sweeping parkland layout through rolling terrain features immaculate conditioning, bold Fazio shaping, and a serene valley setting surrounded by mature hardwoods.

History & Heritage

Caves Valley Golf Club was designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1991 in Maryland\'s hunt country northwest of Baltimore. The club hosted the 2021 BMW Championship — where Patrick Cantlay defeated Bryson DeChambeau on the sixth playoff hole in an epic duel — and is set to host again in 2025 after a major 100-day renovation toughened the course.

The 2021 field averaged nearly 3-under per round, prompting the renovation to add teeth before the 2025 return. Ranked in Golf Digest\'s Second 100 Greatest (No. 154).

Signature Holes

12
Hole 12 Par 3 · 179 yards

Part of the best stretch on the course (holes 9-14). An elevated green with dramatic bunkering and Maryland countryside views. The mid-iron par 3 demands precision.

15
Hole 15 Par 4 · 491 yards

A demanding long par 4 showcasing the rolling terrain and surrounding landscape. Bunkers punish wayward approaches on one of the course\'s sternest tests.

What to Expect

A par-72 playing 7,540 yards from the championship tees through rolling Maryland hunt country. Fast bentgrass greens, undulating fairways, and strategically placed water hazards. The parkland setting through hardwood forests creates a serene, private atmosphere.

The 2025 renovation added significant challenge after the PGA Tour pros torched the 2021 layout. Strictly private — member or guest access only.

Playing Tips

Course management is paramount. Rolling fairways create uneven lies throughout — take an extra moment to assess your stance.

The stretch from holes 9-14 is the heart of the round. Play conservatively if unfamiliar.

Greens are receptive but undulating — missing on the wrong side creates very difficult up-and-downs.
