Congressional Country Club - Blue
Bethesda, Maryland
Host of three U.S. Opens and the 2024 U.S. Women's Open, Congressional's Blue Course is one of the most prominent championship venues near Washington D.C. Andrew Green's comprehensive 2020 restoration removed trees, restored sight lines, and returned the course to its bold, strategic origins.
History & Heritage
Congressional Country Club was founded in 1924, originally designed by Devereux Emmet, 12 miles northwest of the U.S. Capitol in Bethesda. The Blue Course has hosted three U.S. Opens (1964, 1997, 2011) and the 2024 U.S. Women\'s Open.
Andrew Green\'s comprehensive 2019-2021 restoration transformed the course from what critics called one of the dullest championship venues into one of the most distinctive and intriguing. Green stripped away decades of accumulated changes, restored ground-game options, and created an unconventional par-71 with three par 3s, three par 4s, and three par 5s on each nine.
The KPMG Women\'s PGA Championship (2022) was the first major on the renovated Blue Course.
Signature Holes
The iconic finishing hole seen during every U.S. Open broadcast. Water guards the approach — a precise shot over the pond to a well-bunkered green is required. Where championships are decided.
A sweeping downhill par 5 kicking off the back nine with dramatic terrain. Water comes into play for those going for the green in two. Considered one of the most improved holes in the Green renovation.
What to Expect
A unique par-71 where back-to-back holes of the same par only occur once (11th and 12th). Green\'s renovation restored ground-game options — you can fly it or run it up on most holes. The back nine changes character significantly with more dramatic elevation and decisive water on holes 10, 11, and 18.
Championship-caliber conditions throughout. The restoration has been widely praised as one of the most transformative in modern American golf.
Strictly private — one of the most prominent clubs near the nation\'s capital.
Playing Tips
The ground game is back in play after the Green renovation. On many holes, bumping from well short of the green is a viable strategy.
The back nine is the scoring stretch if you play holes 10-13 well. Save your best golf for the finish.
Green complexes are the primary challenge — pin positions on holes like the 14th are particularly devious.
