Country Club of Detroit
Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan
Redesigned by the legendary English duo of Harry Colt and C.H. Alison in 1916, Country Club of Detroit occupies a historic lakeside property in Grosse Pointe Farms. The course hosted the 2008 U.S. Senior Open and features strategic bunkering, undulating greens, and a genteel parkland setting.
History & Heritage
Country Club of Detroit was founded in 1897, making it one of Michigan\'s most historic private clubs. The original course was redesigned by Harry Colt in 1912, with partner C.H. Alison further modifying the design and building additional holes in 1927. In 2011, Tom Doak completed a comprehensive restoration returning the course to its Colt-Alison origins.
The club hosted the 1954 U.S. Amateur — where a young Arnold Palmer announced himself to the world with his victory — and the 2021 U.S. Senior Amateur. Palmer\'s 1954 win here is considered a defining moment in his career.
The 80,000-square-foot clubhouse reflects the grandeur of the Grosse Pointe Farms setting on Lake St. Clair.
Signature Holes
A classic Colt-Alison par 4 where the correct angle of approach matters enormously. The restored green complex with characteristic undulations demands intelligent positioning rather than power.
What to Expect
A classic, refined private club experience. The Doak restoration stripped away decades of accumulated changes to reveal the strategic genius of Colt and Alison. Firm, fast conditions with greens featuring restored original contours.
The layout demands intelligent positioning rather than power. Colt\'s bunker placements define ideal lines of play — strategic, not penal.
Strictly private — one of the most prestigious clubs in Michigan.
Playing Tips
Study green complexes carefully — Colt created greens where the correct angle of approach matters enormously. Missing on the wrong side leaves nearly impossible recoveries.
The bunker placements are strategic guideposts. They define the ideal lines of play rather than simply punishing misses.
Firm, fast conditions reward a ground game. Bump-and-run approaches are viable throughout.
