Forest Dunes Golf Club - The Loop (Red)

Roscommon, Michigan

Resort Course · 18 Holes · Par 72 · 6,978 yds · $100–$225 · 4.8

The first reversible course in America, Tom Doak's The Loop at Forest Dunes plays as two completely different 18-hole courses depending on the direction. The Red routing winds clockwise through Michigan pine barrens with creative green complexes and no two rounds ever the same.

History & Heritage

The Loop at Forest Dunes opened in 2016, designed by Tom Doak (Renaissance Golf Design) as the first fully reversible golf course in the modern era. Using 18 greens and 18 distinct fairways, it creates two completely different 18-hole experiences: the Red routing (counter-clockwise on even days) and the Black routing (clockwise on odd days).

Won Golf Digest\'s Best New Course award upon opening. Part of a resort complex in Roscommon that also includes the original Forest Dunes course (Weiskopf design). Doak, a Michigan native, brought personal significance to the project.

On months with 31 days, the resort holds "The Dual" — a 36-hole event playing both directions.

Signature Holes

9
Hole 9 Par 4 · 400 yards

On the Red routing — a strategic par 4 through pristine northern Michigan pine corridors. Because the course reverses, this hole becomes a completely different experience on the Black routing. The variety of angles and green complexes means no two rounds ever feel alike.

What to Expect

Wide fairways reward strategic positioning rather than raw distance. Enormous greens have dramatic internal contours — being on the correct tier matters more than being on the green at all. Walking-friendly layout through sandy, well-drained pine barrens terrain.

The Red routing plays counter-clockwise (even days); the Black plays clockwise (odd days). Both are top-tier designs offering genuinely different experiences on the same land.

Resort access with stay-and-play packages available in Roscommon, Michigan\'s northern Lower Peninsula.

Playing Tips

Think angles, not distance. Doak designed fairways to reward specific sides for approach shots.

The greens are large but heavily contoured. Being on the correct tier is critical — a 60-foot putt from the wrong section is common.

Walking is encouraged and the terrain is gentle. Enjoy the pine barrens atmosphere.

Study pin positions carefully before every approach.
