Huntingdon Valley Country Club
Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania
A William Flynn redesign on one of the oldest club properties in the Philadelphia area, Huntingdon Valley features a tight, tree-lined parkland layout demanding accuracy. Flynn's green complexes are among his most intricate, with subtle contours that test even the best short games.
History & Heritage
Huntingdon Valley was organized in 1896 and first played on in 1897, making it the first club in the Philadelphia area organized exclusively for golf. The current layout was designed by William Flynn, with the main 18-hole course opening in 1928.
A careful restoration by architect Andrew Green focused on tree removal to restore sightlines, bunker re-edging, tee improvements, and drainage — described as "brushing dust off ancient pottery rather than creating replicas."
Robert Trent Jones himself called the par-3 8th "one of the finest par 3s he had ever played." Ranked among the top private courses in Pennsylvania and top-3 in the Philadelphia area by Golf Digest.
Signature Holes
Features a lake that Flynn created in 1927 — among the first examples in the U.S. of an architect building a lake specifically to defend a par-3 green. A picturesque and strategically demanding one-shotter.
Robert Trent Jones himself called this one of the finest par 3s he had ever played. High praise from the legendary architect.
Each shot gets progressively tighter, with strategic bunkering leading to one of the course\'s smallest, firmest greens. Classic Flynn progressive difficulty.
What to Expect
The course is routed through a scenic wooded bowl with a stream running through it. The front nine plays counter-clockwise around the top; the back nine loops clockwise at the bottom. Greens are among the firmest in Philadelphia, canting side-to-side rather than predictable back-to-front.
Firm, fast conditions emphasize a traditional ground-game approach. Flynn\'s intricate green complexes test even the best short games.
Strictly private — one of the top-3 private courses in the Philadelphia area.
Playing Tips
Forget standard back-to-front green reads — Flynn\'s greens require side-to-side thinking. This is the key to scoring here.
Firm conditions reward bump-and-run approaches throughout. Don\'t automatically reach for the lob wedge.
Study green complexes carefully before committing to club selection. The intricate contours are Flynn\'s primary defense.
