Isleworth Golf & Country Club
Windermere, Florida
Nestled among the Butler Chain of Lakes in Windermere, Isleworth is one of the most exclusive and celebrity-studded private clubs in America. Originally designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, the course was later enhanced by Steve Smyers to produce a 7,544-yard par-72 layout with a slope of 142.
History & Heritage
Arnold Palmer purchased the land in 1984 with a vision for a luxury residential golf community on a former orange grove interwoven with the Butler Chain of Lakes. The original 18-hole course, designed by Palmer and Ed Seay, opened in 1986. The early years were financially rocky before the community rebounded into one of the most prestigious addresses in the country.
In 2003, architect Steve Smyers undertook a total reconstruction: every hole was regraded, yardage stretched from 7,179 to 7,544 yards (Florida's longest at the time), slope climbed from 135 to 142, greens converted from bent to TifEagle bermuda, and 65 high-flashed bunkers were cut into hillsides. Ten holes interact directly with the Butler Chain of Lakes.
Tiger Woods lived at Isleworth for years, in a home across from the practice facility. In the lead-up to the 1997 Masters — where he won by 12 strokes — Woods famously shot a practice-round 59 here. Other notable residents have included Shaquille O'Neal, Mark O'Meara, and Justin Rose. The Hero World Challenge (Tiger's foundation tournament) was previously held here.
Signature Holes
The "Cypress Chute" — a par 3 over 200 yards through a tight corridor of cypress trees. Widely regarded as one of the hardest par 3s in Florida with minimal margin for error. One of three lowest-handicap holes that hit you early on the front nine.
The visual highlight of the round, featuring flower beds and lake views on the Butler Chain. Described as the "Kodak moment of the day." Beautiful but demanding positioning off the tee.
One of the two hardest handicap holes on the course. A diabolical green complex that can turn a good round sour in a hurry. Two precise shots are mandatory.
What to Expect
Isleworth occupies 600 gated acres on the Butler Chain of Lakes in Windermere. The Smyers reconstruction created rolling terrain uncommon for Florida — extensive earthwork added swells, swales, mounds, and hollows throughout. Challenge comes through contour and angle rather than penal hazards.
At 7,544 yards with a 142 slope, this is a genuine championship test. Six tee options range down to 5,747 yards. TifEagle bermuda greens run fast, and 65 high-flashed bunkers demand precise approach play. Ten holes interact with the lakes.
The 89,000-square-foot Mediterranean clubhouse, two-acre short-game area, and 11,000-square-foot putting green reflect the exclusive standard. Access is strictly private — members and guests only.
Playing Tips
Choose tees wisely. At 6,400 yards the course is all most amateurs can handle. The 7,544-yard tips with 142 slope are a serious championship test.
The par 3s are course-defining holes — especially the 210-yard 2nd through the cypress chute. Club up and aim center.
Smyers built strategic mounds and hollows into every hole. The TifEagle greens run fast. Leave approach shots below the hole.
Ten holes interact with the Butler Chain of Lakes. Bring extra golf balls and know your carry distances.
The two-acre short-game area is elite — warming up there before your round is essential given the difficulty.
