Founded by Jack Nicklaus and host of the Memorial Tournament since 1976, Muirfield Village is one of the most immaculately conditioned courses in the world. Nicklaus's design through rolling central Ohio terrain features dramatic green complexes, strategic water hazards, and a routing that creates natural amphitheaters for spectators.

History & Heritage

Muirfield Village was conceived by Jack Nicklaus in the 1960s, built on 220 acres near his Columbus hometown, and dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974. Named after Muirfield in Scotland, where Nicklaus won his first Open Championship (1966). The Memorial Tournament has been held here since 1976 — now a PGA Tour Signature Event.

Nicklaus continually updates the course, with multiple significant renovations over the decades. The 2026 Memorial is June 1-7. Tiger Woods has won the Memorial a record five times. The conditioning standard is among the highest in world golf.

Signature Holes

12
Hole 12 Par 3 · 180 yards

A demanding par 3 over water with a green guarded by bunkers and a pond. Has produced some of the Memorial Tournament\'s most dramatic moments. One of two iconic water-guarded par 3s (alongside the 16th).

What to Expect

Meticulously conditioned, strategic par-72 at 7,456 yards. Doglegs, water hazards, and deep bunkers demand precise shotmaking. Large but heavily contoured greens where putting from the wrong tier makes two-putting very difficult.

The closing stretch (15-18) is one of the toughest finishes on the PGA Tour.

Strictly private — public access only during Memorial Tournament week.

Playing Tips

Course management is paramount. Nicklaus designed corridors rewarding specific shot shapes.

Avoid the deep greenside bunkers — they are designed to penalize.

The greens are large but contoured. Being on the correct tier is essential.
