Nashville Golf & Athletic Club
Nashville, Tennessee
A Bob Cupp design in Brentwood, Nashville Golf & Athletic Club is a well-regarded private club with a demanding layout through Middle Tennessee hills. The course rewards precision and course management.
History & Heritage
Nashville Golf & Athletic Club opened in 1988, designed by Bob Cupp — a former senior designer for Jack Nicklaus (1972-1986) who went on to design over 150 courses worldwide and served as ASGCA President in 2012-13. The club sits in Brentwood on dramatic Middle Tennessee terrain at 1703 Crockett Springs Trail.
The course plays up to 7,525 yards from the tips with a 137 slope and 76.8 rating, making it one of the most difficult layouts in Tennessee. The dramatic elevation changes throughout create memorable and challenging tee shots on nearly every hole.
Cupp passed away in 2016 at age 76, making Nashville Golf & Athletic Club one of his enduring Tennessee designs.
Signature Holes
A notably punishing opener that has been featured in "Design Disasters" discussions for its difficulty. Sets an immediate tone that this is not a casual round — the course demands respect from the first swing.
What to Expect
A classic Bob Cupp design with fast greens, thick rough, and abundant bunkers set across dramatic Middle Tennessee elevation changes. The course rewards precision and course management — you will hit every club in your bag.
Despite its metro location in Brentwood, the course feels removed and rural. The greens are a particular highlight, kept in excellent condition with significant undulation. Reviewers describe it as "tough but fair" with more great holes than most private clubs in the region.
Access is strictly private — members and guests only.
Playing Tips
Play from the right tees. At 7,525 yards from the tips with a 137 slope, this course is long and demanding. The middle tees offer a more enjoyable experience for most golfers.
The elevation changes are deceptive — trust your yardage device over your eyes. Uphill and downhill shots require careful club adjustment.
Thick rough penalizes errant shots heavily. Accuracy off the tee is paramount.
The fast, undulating greens demand precise distance control on approach shots. Favor below-the-hole positions for manageable putts.
