Oak Tree National
Edmond, Oklahoma
Host of the 1988 PGA Championship and 2014 U.S. Senior Open, Oak Tree National is Pete Dye's Oklahoma masterpiece. The challenging par-71 through mature oaks and rolling terrain features Dye's bold shaping, strategic water hazards, and intimidating forced carries that have tested the game's best players.
History & Heritage
Oak Tree National was designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1976 in Edmond, north of Oklahoma City. Founded to host major championships. Has hosted the 1984 U.S. Amateur, 1988 PGA Championship (won by Jeff Sluman), 2006 Senior PGA Championship, and 2014 U.S. Senior Open. Will host the 2027 U.S. Senior Open.
Forbes ranked it among the five hardest courses in the United States. At the 2014 U.S. Senior Open, only four players finished below par for the entire tournament. The 1988 PGA was a watershed moment for Dye\'s reputation as a championship architect.
Signature Holes
Part of a relentlessly demanding layout where Dye\'s railroad ties, severe bunkering, and forced carries create target golf requiring precise ball flight. Forbes listed this among the five hardest courses in the US.
What to Expect
A demanding par-71 through mature oaks with Dye\'s visual intimidation throughout. Target golf — you must carry the ball to specific landing areas. Deep penal bunkers and optical illusions distort distances.
Strictly private — one of the most decorated championship venues in Oklahoma.
Playing Tips
This is target golf — carry to specific landing areas. Avoid Dye bunkers at all costs. Club selection must account for optical illusions.
