Pacific Grove Golf Links

Pacific Grove, California

Public Course · 18 Holes · Par 70 · 5,732 yds · $25–$55 · 4.1

Known as the "Poor Man's Pebble Beach," Pacific Grove Municipal offers ocean-side golf at a fraction of the cost. The Jack Neville back nine plays along the rugged Pacific coastline with crashing waves, tide pools, and views of Point Pinos Lighthouse — a remarkable value on the Monterey Peninsula.

History & Heritage

Pacific Grove Golf Links features two distinct designers across its two nines. H. Chandler Egan designed the original front nine in the early 1930s. In 1932, the City of Pacific Grove reportedly purchased the oceanfront land for the back nine with a single $10 gold coin, and Jack Neville — co-designer of Pebble Beach Golf Links — designed those nine holes along the rocky coastline.

The beloved nickname "Poor Man\'s Pebble Beach" reflects the remarkable value: oceanfront golf by Pebble Beach\'s co-designer at roughly $50 vs. $600+. City-owned municipal course, par 70, 5,732 yards.

Signature Holes

12
Hole 12 Par 4 · 355 yards

"Rocky Shore" — one of seven back-nine holes directly along the Pacific Ocean. The Point Pinos Lighthouse (1855, oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast) is visible in the background. Ocean and wind define every shot.

15
Hole 15 Par 4 · 397 yards

The toughest hole on the back nine — an uphill par 4 demanding an accurate drive and strong approach into the prevailing wind. The ocean backdrop makes it unforgettable despite the difficulty.

What to Expect

Two dramatically different nines. The front (Egan) is an inland affair — pleasant but unremarkable. The back nine (Neville) is the revelation: seven consecutive holes along the Pacific with the Point Pinos Lighthouse visible from every hole. The contrast is dramatic.

The back nine is heavily wind-exposed — expect 1-3 clubs of wind on coastal holes. Ocean-side is OB on most back-nine holes.

At roughly $50, arguably the greatest oceanfront golf value in the United States.

Playing Tips

The front nine is warmup. Save energy and focus for the spectacular back nine.

On the back nine, favor the left side off the tee — the ocean (right) is OB on most holes.

Morning tee times have calmer conditions before afternoon winds pick up.

Expect 1-3 clubs of wind adjustment on coastal holes. The wind is constant and real.
