Public Course · 18 Holes · Par 72 · 7,291 yds · $50–$90 · 4.3

A Mike Strantz design east of Richmond modeled after the great links of Ireland, Royal New Kent is one of the most unique public courses in Virginia. The dramatic layout features massive dunes, deep pot bunkers, elevated greens, and a windswept character that creates an authentic links experience in the Virginia Tidewater region.

History & Heritage

Royal New Kent was designed by Mike Strantz (former Tom Fazio protege) and opened in 1997, transforming 280 acres of Virginia terrain into an Irish links experience on the American mainland. Strantz sculpted massive dunes, deep pot bunkers, and windswept fairways to evoke Ballybunion and Lahinch — one of only eight courses he completed before his death in 2005.

One of the most difficult public courses in the country from the tips at 7,440 yards. Frequently compared to Strantz\'s other masterwork, Tobacco Road.

Playing Tips

Play appropriate tees — 7,440-yard tips are punishing. Multiple blind shots require a yardage book or local knowledge.

Course management and creativity matter far more than distance. Accept unpredictable bounces off mounds.
