Public Course · 18 Holes · Par 72 · 6,275 yds · $35–$55 · 4

The only Alister MacKenzie-designed municipal course on the West Coast, Sharp Park in Pacifica sits between the Pacific Ocean and a coastal lagoon along the dramatic San Mateo County coast. The affordable layout offers classic MacKenzie strategic bunkering and green complexes in an unforgettable oceanside setting.

History & Heritage

Sharp Park was designed by Alister MacKenzie in 1931 and opened in 1932 on a former artichoke farm between the Pacific Ocean and Laguna Salada, a coastal lagoon. It is MacKenzie\'s only American seaside municipal course — the same architect who designed Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne created this affordable public course.

Nicknamed "The Poor Man\'s Pebble Beach," Sharp Park has endured decades of controversy: environmentalists have pushed to close it due to habitat concerns for the San Francisco garter snake and California red-legged frog, while public golf advocates have fought to preserve this MacKenzie treasure. Owned by the City of San Francisco but located in Pacifica, about 10 miles south.

Signature Holes

Hole 14 Par 4 · 363 yards

Plays alongside the Pacific Ocean with the coastal lagoon in view. One of the holes that best captures MacKenzie\'s seaside links intent — wind, ocean, and strategic bunkering create a classic experience.

What to Expect

A semi-links layout set between the Pacific Ocean and Laguna Salada lagoon. Wind and weather dictate play as on any true seaside course. MacKenzie\'s characteristic rolling green contours provide the strategic defense.

Conditions can be inconsistent due to municipal budget constraints — manage expectations. But at $35-55 for an oceanside MacKenzie design, this is one of the great values in American golf.

The hillside stretch (holes 4-7) climbs up with challenging terrain and views, showcasing MacKenzie\'s ability to route through varied topography.

Playing Tips

Wind is the primary defense. The ocean exposure makes club selection critical on every hole.

The greens have more slope than they appear — MacKenzie\'s subtle contours reward careful reading.

The lagoon comes into play on several holes. Know your carry distances.

The course plays dramatically different calm vs. windy. Afternoon winds are typically stronger.
