Shoal Creek Golf Club
Shoal Creek, Alabama
Host of two PGA Championships (1984, 1990) and the 1986 U.S. Amateur, Shoal Creek is one of the most important courses in Southern golf. Jack Nicklaus's design through the wooded ridges of central Alabama features dramatic elevation changes, pristine conditioning, and a championship pedigree that few private clubs can match.
History & Heritage
Shoal Creek was built by Alabama tractor magnate Hall Thompson and opened in 1977 with a Jack Nicklaus design through wooded foothills south of Birmingham. Hosted the 1984 PGA Championship (Lee Trevino won at age 44), 1986 U.S. Amateur, 1990 PGA Championship (Wayne Grady), and 2008 and 2018 U.S. Women\'s Opens.
The 1990 PGA became a watershed moment for golf when Thompson\'s comments on membership policies triggered national reckoning on racial inclusion at private clubs. Consistently rated No. 1 in Alabama.
Signature Holes
A downhill par 3 to a green completely fronted by a pond and flanked by bunkers — visually stunning and nerve-testing. One of Nicklaus\'s most photogenic short holes.
What to Expect
Demanding Nicklaus design at 7,100+ yards through heavily wooded, hilly terrain at 786 feet elevation. Thick rough, elevation changes, and well-protected greens. Championship pedigree few private clubs can match.
Strictly private — No. 1 course in Alabama.
Playing Tips
The rough is notoriously punishing. Course management and tee accuracy are paramount.
The dogleg 9th is the most difficult hole — wind always a factor. Elevation changes demand precise distance control.
