Waverley Country Club

Portland, Oregon

Private Club · 18 Holes · Par 72 · 6,618 yds · Members Only · 4.5

Founded in 1896 and redesigned by H. Chandler Egan in 1913, Waverley is Portland's most prestigious private club. Located on the banks of the Willamette River with views of Mount Hood, the classic parkland layout features mature Douglas fir corridors, strategic bunkering, and a refined atmosphere steeped in Pacific Northwest golf history.

History & Heritage

Founded in April 1896, Waverley is the second-oldest private golf club west of the Mississippi River. Originally in Portland\'s Richmond neighborhood, it relocated in 1897 to the east bank of the Willamette River on land that was formerly the Luelling/Lewelling orchard — where the Bing cherry was developed.

H. Chandler Egan established the current routing between 1912 and his death in 1936. Gil Hanse completed a 2012 restoration using historical photographs to revive Egan\'s original design elements. The tournament history is extraordinary: the 1970 U.S. Amateur (Lanny Wadkins), 1981 U.S. Women\'s Amateur (Juli Inkster), and the 1993 U.S. Junior Amateur (Tiger Woods, age 15) were all held here.

Signature Holes

Hole 13 Par 4 · 385 yards

One of several holes routing along the Willamette River\'s edge, with Mount Hood framing the backdrop on clear days. Egan\'s subtle green complexes reward precision over power.

What to Expect

A classic, walkable private course at par 71 and 6,668 yards (slope 134). Old-growth trees, Willamette River views, and Egan\'s subtle green complexes reward precision over power. The Hanse restoration stripped away decades of changes to reveal the original strategic intent.

The compact layout emphasizes ground-game approach shots and careful putting on greens with subtle, deceptive breaks. Mount Hood views on clear days add to the Pacific Northwest atmosphere.

Strictly private — Portland\'s most prestigious club.

Playing Tips

Egan\'s greens are more complex than they appear. Study the surrounds and use them for recovery shots.

The river and mature trees define many corridors, placing a premium on shot shaping.

Walking is the best way to experience Waverley — the compact terrain provides better reads on the subtle slopes.
