Mike Strantz
Golf Course Architect
Biography
Mike Strantz was a visionary golf course architect whose tragically short career produced some of the most bold, artistic, and polarizing courses in America. A former Tom Fazio associate who struck out on his own, Strantz hand-painted his routing plans in watercolor and approached golf design as an art form. His untimely death from oral cancer in 2005 at age 50 ended a career that was producing increasingly acclaimed work. His courses — Tobacco Road, Caledonia, True Blue, Tot Hill Farm — are beloved by architecture enthusiasts and attract pilgrims from around the world.
Design Philosophy
Strantz believed golf courses should provoke emotion and wonder. His designs feature dramatic visual elements — massive dunes, blind shots, unconventional green complexes — that challenge golfers' expectations and reward creativity. He was unafraid to polarize, saying courses should make you think and feel rather than simply execute.
