History & Heritage
Arizona National Golf Club opened in 1996, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains, abutting Coronado National Forest and near Saguaro National Park. Voted Best Public Golf Course in Tucson, it serves as the home course for the University of Arizona golf program. Managed by Troon Golf.
The layout meanders up and down saguaro-capped hillsides with significant elevation changes throughout, offering panoramic desert and mountain views on nearly every hole.
Signature Holes
A strategic par 4 where mid-fairway bunkers force a decision off the tee — sometimes requiring the driver to stay in the bag. Panoramic Catalina Mountain views frame the approach.
What to Expect
A mountain-desert experience on manicured fairways with natural Sonoran terrain framing every hole. The layout rewards accuracy over distance with mid-fairway bunkers punishing blind aggression. Views of the Santa Catalinas are constant companions.
Pace of play can be slow during peak season (5+ hours reported). Peak rates run $120+; summer rates are significantly discounted.
Playing Tips
Club selection is critical due to elevation changes — shots play shorter uphill and longer downhill.
Watch for mid-fairway traps that punish blind aggression off the tee. Sometimes the smart play is an iron.
Desert air adds distance. Factor altitude into every club selection.
Summer rates offer significant savings if you can handle the Tucson heat.
