Charleston Municipal Golf Course
Charleston, South Carolina
A remarkably well-preserved Seth Raynor municipal design in downtown Charleston, "The Muni" offers template hole architecture at city-course pricing. The flat Lowcountry layout features Raynor's trademark Redan, Punchbowl, and Short holes, making it one of the most architecturally significant public courses in the South.
History & Heritage
Charleston Municipal Golf Course was transformed in a 2019-2020 renovation led by architect Troy Miller into a deliberate homage to Golden Age architect Seth Raynor. Miller\'s redesign brought famous template holes — Redan, Punchbowl, Short — typically found only at elite private clubs like nearby Yeamans Hall to an affordable city-owned public course.
The result turned a modest muni into one of the most architecturally interesting public courses in the country. Golf Digest recognized the renovation. Located just 10 minutes from downtown Charleston at city-course pricing ($25-50).
Signature Holes
The Redan — modeled on Raynor\'s famous template with a green angled away from the player and a backstop feeding balls toward the pin. A world-class green design you can play in blue jeans at municipal pricing.
The Punchbowl — features a dramatic punchbowl green where shots funnel toward the center. A blind approach over hidden bunkers makes club selection and trajectory critical. Template architecture at its finest.
What to Expect
An affordable public course with private-club-quality architecture. Walkable and relatively short, emphasizing angles, ground game, and strategic thinking over power. Bold Raynor-inspired green contours throughout.
One of the best ways for public-access golfers to experience template hole architecture otherwise locked behind exclusive private gates.
City-owned at $25-50 — extraordinary value for the architectural significance.
Playing Tips
Study green contours before putting — the template greens have built-in slopes working for or against you.
The Redan green rewards shots to the high side. On punchbowl greens, use the slopes rather than fighting them.
Bump-and-run approaches are often smarter than lofted wedges on these classic green complexes.
