Firethorne Country Club

Firethorne Country Club opened in 2000 in Weddington, North Carolina, just south of Charlotte, designed by three-time US Open Champion Hale Irwin. Irwin founded Hale Irwin Golf Design in 1986 and has produced numerous award-winning courses; Firethorne is considered one of his most successful Carolinas designs.

The course is built on rolling Piedmont terrain with mature hardwood groves, creating a setting that feels more like a classic parkland course than contemporary development golf. Irwin's design emphasis on strategic bunkering and green defense produces a layout that demands precision on approach shots — a hallmark of his design philosophy rooted in his own playing career on difficult US Open venues. At 7,100 yards from the tips, Firethorne is one of the most respected newer private clubs in the greater Charlotte market.
