History & Heritage

Detroit Golf Club was founded in 1899 and moved to its current Palmer Park location in 1916 when Donald Ross designed both the North and South courses. Early members included Henry Ford.

After decades without professional tournament golf in the city, Detroit Golf Club landed the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2019, the first PGA Tour event ever held in Detroit proper. The tournament uses 17 holes from the North Course and one from the South.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic has become a popular PGA Tour fixture, bringing economic impact and national attention to Detroit.

4
Hole 4 Par 4 · 472 yards

A long par 4 through a tight tree-lined corridor with deep bunkers guarding both sides of the crowned Ross green.

Hole 9 Par 4 · 455 yards

A strong front-nine finisher where the fairway narrows between mature trees, often requiring a long iron approach to the crowned green.

14
Hole 14 Par 5 · 557 yards

A risk-reward par 5 reachable in two for long hitters, with bunkers and surrounding trees creating a dramatic amphitheater during tournaments.

18
Hole 18 Par 4 · 478 yards

A demanding finishing hole with a long approach to a well-defended green, playing as one of the toughest during the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

What to Expect

Detroit Golf Club is a classic Donald Ross parkland course in a beautiful urban park setting. Mature trees line every fairway, and Ross's crowned greens provide the primary defense. At 7,341 yards from the tips, it is a serious test.

The course has old-fashioned charm, with wide fairways off the tee narrowing near the greens. Conditioning is excellent, particularly around the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Playing Tips

Ross's crowned greens are the defining feature. Approach shots must land softly on the correct portion, as misses roll off into collection areas. A reliable short game is essential.

Mature trees create tight corridors, but fairways are generally generous. Favor accuracy over distance off the tee.
