La Quinta Resort - Mountain Course

Palm Springs, California

Resort Course · 18 Holes · Par 72 · 6,758 yds · $100–$225 · 4.6

Set against the dramatic Santa Rosa Mountains at the historic La Quinta Resort, the Mountain Course is a Pete Dye desert classic and part of the American Express PGA Tour rotation. The intimate desert canyon setting and mountain backdrop create one of the most photogenic rounds in the Coachella Valley.

History & Heritage

The Mountain Course at La Quinta Resort was designed by Pete Dye and opened in 1980, nestled at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains. Part of the PGA WEST complex — the "Western Home of Golf in America" — the Mountain Course is one of Dye\'s most dramatic desert designs.

The front 13 holes wind through a residential community alongside jagged rock outcroppings, then holes 14-18 climb spectacularly into the mountain foothills with elevation changes and panoramic desert views. The stretch from 14 to 16 is widely considered among the most scenic consecutive holes in the Coachella Valley.

Signature Holes

16
Hole 16 Par 3 · 167 yards

An iconic mountain par 3 with virtually no margin for error — a rocky amphitheater with trouble short, long, left, and right. One of the most photographed holes in desert golf.

2
Hole 2 Par 3 · 205 yards

A classic Pete Dye par 3 with water flanking the entire left side. The water draws the eye and tempts a bail-out right where bunkers wait.

What to Expect

A shorter Pete Dye design (6,758 yards) relying on trademark pot bunkers, rock features, tall native grasses, and tricky elevated greens rather than raw length. The back nine (especially 13-18) transitions into genuinely mountainous terrain with dramatic elevation changes and panoramic Santa Rosa Mountain views.

Conditioning is typically excellent. Open to resort guests and public play as part of the PGA WEST complex.

Playing Tips

Don\'t let the modest yardage fool you — accuracy matters far more than distance on this Dye design.

The greens are contoured and punishing. Favor below-the-hole positions throughout.

On the mountain holes (14-18), trust your yardage over your eyes. Elevation changes distort visual perception.

Bring extra balls for the par 3s — Dye\'s green complexes have severe penalties for misses.
