Lakewood Golf Club
New Orleans, Louisiana
A Seth Raynor design in the Algiers Point neighborhood across the Mississippi from downtown, Lakewood Golf Club is one of the finest private clubs in Louisiana. Raynor's template holes including Redan and Biarritz are rendered through live oaks and Bayou Fatma, creating a unique blend of Golden Age architecture and Southern Louisiana landscape.
History & Heritage
Lakewood Golf Club was originally designed by Robert Bruce Harris and opened in 1961 on the West Bank of New Orleans. The course hosted the New Orleans Open 26 times, giving it deep PGA Tour pedigree. Later renovated by Ron Garl, who preserved the character while upgrading the layout.
The famous 18th hole "Fire in the Hole" features bunkers shaped like flames set in red sand — a tribute to New Orleans firefighters. The only bunker design of its kind in golf worldwide.
Signature Holes
"Fire in the Hole" — bunkers shaped like flames in red sand, a tribute to New Orleans firefighters. One of the most iconic and unique bunker designs in golf. A 444-yard closer with both visual drama and genuine challenge.
What to Expect
A full-length parkland course at 7,002 yards with mature cypress and oak-lined fairways. The Garl renovation modernized the layout while honoring its PGA Tour heritage (26 New Orleans Open events). Flat and walkable.
Semi-private — public access available.
Playing Tips
At over 7,000 yards from the tips, it plays long. The flame bunkers on 18 are in play, not just decorative.
