Pronghorn Resort - Fazio Course
Bend, Oregon
The private companion to Pronghorn's Nicklaus Course, Tom Fazio's design is the longer of the two at 7,464 yards through high desert terrain. The bold Fazio shaping through juniper and lava rock with Cascade volcano views creates one of the most dramatic private club experiences in the Pacific Northwest.
History & Heritage
Pronghorn\'s Fazio Course opened in 2006-2007 as the private companion to the Jack Nicklaus Course — the first time Nicklaus and Fazio designed side-by-side courses at one property. Now part of Juniper Preserve, ranked No. 3 in Oregon by some evaluators. Golf Digest ranked Pronghorn 18th among best U.S. golf resorts (2025).
Fazio called it one of his finest natural canvas projects. The minimalist design follows natural high-desert contours with ancient lava rock outcroppings and juniper trees.
Signature Holes
Plays across and into a 45-foot-deep ancient lava tube canyon. The exposed volcanic geology is unlike anything else in American golf. The former greenskeeper reportedly had an office inside the lava tube itself.
What to Expect
A 7,400-yard minimalist design through ancient lava rock and juniper. Sculptured greens, rolling fairways, and sweeping Cascade views (Bachelor, Broken Top, Three Sisters). Walkable terrain emphasizing strategy over raw difficulty.
Private/members-only — resort guests at Juniper Preserve can access it.
Playing Tips
Lava rock is everywhere — balls that stray are gone forever. Course management is paramount.
Wind on the exposed high plateau is a significant factor. Play from the right tees — 7,400 yards at altitude is serious.
