History & Heritage

Tetherow Golf Club opened in 2008 as the creation of Scottish architect David McLay Kidd, who first gained fame designing the original Bandon Dunes course on the Oregon coast. Kidd brought his links sensibility inland to the high desert above Bend, building on volcanic soil at roughly 3,600 feet elevation with panoramic views of Broken Top, South Sister, and Mount Bachelor.

The course was the first in Oregon to achieve Audubon Certified Signature Sanctuary status, reflecting its environmentally sensitive design through native fescue grasses and minimal irrigation. Kidd designed the layout to play firm and fast, a stark departure from the soft conditions typical of Pacific Northwest golf.

Tetherow quickly earned recognition as one of the top resort courses in the Pacific Northwest and is consistently ranked among the best courses in Oregon.

Signature Holes

Hole 5 Par 4 · 380 yards

A short par 4 that epitomizes the strategic nature of the course. Multiple angles of approach and firm fescue conditions reward creativity over brute force.

A visually stunning par 3 with Cascade volcanoes as a backdrop. The green is exposed to wind and surrounded by native fescue.

A sweeping finishing par 5 with panoramic Cascade views. Risk-reward options create exciting finish possibilities.

What to Expect

Tetherow is unlike any other course in the Pacific Northwest. The firm, fast fescue conditions on volcanic soil play more like a Scottish links than an American resort course. Creative ground-game shots are often preferred. Wind is a constant factor on the exposed high desert terrain.

The Cascade volcano views are extraordinary, visible from virtually every hole.

Playing Tips

Embrace the ground game. Tetherow rewards bump-and-run shots, low runners, and creative approaches. The firm fescue fairways allow the ball to release significantly.

Wind management is essential. The high desert terrain is exposed and conditions can change rapidly. Take an extra club into the wind and play lower trajectory shots when possible.
