George Wright Golf Course
Boston, Massachusetts
A hidden Donald Ross gem in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood, George Wright is widely regarded as one of the best municipal courses in America. The restored Ross design features classic crowned greens, strategic bunkering, and excellent value in the heart of the city.
History & Heritage
George Wright Golf Course was originally commissioned to Donald Ross in the 1920s, but the 1929 stock market crash halted the project. Walter Irving Johnson, a former Ross associate, completed the build using Ross\'s plans, and the course opened in 1938 as a WPA-era municipal project in Boston\'s Hyde Park neighborhood.
Beginning in 2003, architect Mark Mungeam undertook an ongoing restoration to recover Ross\'s original design intent — clearing encroaching trees, restoring green contours, and reclaiming bunker lines. The restoration has elevated George Wright into discussions as one of the best municipal courses in America.
Named for George Wright, a 19th-century baseball pioneer.
Signature Holes
Frequently cited as the signature hole — a demanding par 5 that epitomizes the course\'s character with strategic options and Ross\'s characteristic crowned green complex.
One of the most interesting holes, requiring a well-placed drive and a testing approach to a contoured Ross green. Classic Golden Age design at its best.
What to Expect
An urban course with a surprisingly sylvan feel — mature trees line most holes, and a few holes capture Boston skyline views. Ross\'s trademark crowned, tilted greens with fallaway edges are the primary defense.
Several holes feature blind or semi-blind shots, adding old-school character. At par 70 and 6,418 yards, it is not long but the green complexes make it play harder than the yardage suggests.
The Mungeam restoration has dramatically improved both conditions and design clarity. Green fees remain municipal-affordable — extraordinary value for Ross architecture.
Playing Tips
Study the greens carefully. Ross\'s putting surfaces are deceptively contoured — missing on the wrong side leaves very difficult up-and-downs.
On blind-shot holes, trust the lines suggested by the terrain and play conservatively until you learn the course.
At par 70 and under 6,500 yards, the course is playable for all skill levels but punishes sloppy short games.
Geese are a constant presence and unafraid of golfers. Plan accordingly.
