Hermitage Country Club
Richmond, Virginia
A historic Tillinghast design in Richmond's West End, Hermitage Country Club is one of the most storied private clubs in Virginia. The compact but strategic par-71 features Tillinghast's trademark dramatic bunkering and challenging green complexes on a mature parkland property that has hosted state and regional championships.
History & Heritage
Hermitage Country Club was founded in 1900 — one of Virginia\'s oldest clubs, originally built to boost ridership on Richmond\'s trolley lines. The original course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast with later Donald Ross alterations. The club relocated to its current Goochland County property with 36 holes.
The original Hermitage course (now Belmont, a separate public facility) hosted the 1949 PGA Championship won by Sam Snead 3-and-2 in match play.
Signature Holes
Tillinghast\'s strategic bunkering and green complexes — hallmarks seen at Winged Foot and Baltusrol — are most evident on this classic par 4 demanding accuracy over power.
What to Expect
Classic old-school private club experience reflecting a century of tradition. 36 holes (Hermitage and Ethelwood courses) with mature trees and understated elegance.
Strictly private — one of the oldest continuously operating country clubs in Virginia.
