Mountain Brook Club
Birmingham, Alabama
A Donald Ross design in the exclusive Mountain Brook community, this private club is one of the most respected in Alabama. Ross's layout through rolling terrain features his characteristic crowned greens, strategic cross-hazards, and a lush parkland setting that captures the elegance of Golden Age Southern golf.
History & Heritage
Mountain Brook Club opened in 1929, designed by Donald Ross and his Pinehurst associates in the exclusive Mountain Brook suburb of Birmingham. George Cobb renovated in 1964-65 and John LaFoy in 1985. One of only a handful of Ross designs in Alabama.
Ross\'s trademark crowned greens with subtle fall-offs on all sides demand precise approach shots. Miss the crown and the ball rolls into collection areas. Extremely private — guest access is rare.
Signature Holes
A classic Ross par 4 where the pushed-up crowned green rejects anything imprecise. Ross\'s original routing through rolling Birmingham terrain has been largely preserved despite two subsequent renovations.
What to Expect
Traditional Ross at 6,473 yards through natural rolling terrain. Bermuda throughout. Rewards shot-making over power. The greens are the defense — crowned surfaces with false fronts.
Extremely private — one of Birmingham\'s most exclusive social institutions.
Playing Tips
Study the crowns and false fronts. Miss to the low side. Bump-and-run approaches work when possible. Course knowledge is a major advantage.
