The Quarry Golf Club

San Antonio, Texas

Public Course · 18 Holes · Par 71 · 6,740 yds · $45–$90 · 4.3

Built in an abandoned cement quarry, The Quarry is one of the most visually dramatic public courses in Texas. The back nine descends 100 feet into the quarry floor, surrounded by towering 200-foot limestone walls that create a one-of-a-kind golfing amphitheater.

History & Heritage

The Quarry Golf Club opened in 1993-94, designed by Keith Foster on the site of an abandoned Alamo Cement Company limestone quarry that operated for decades before closing in 1983. Within a decade, Foster transformed the industrial relic into one of San Antonio\'s most celebrated courses — consistently rated the best public course in the city.

The back nine descends into the quarry itself, surrounded by massive limestone walls up to 200 feet high with a central lake. The front nine plays as a contrasting links-style layout above ground.

Hole 13 Par 4 · 323 yards

"Escape from Alcatraz" — a horseshoe dogleg left with sheer limestone cliffs running from tee to green. The fairway wraps around the quarry lake, demanding an accurate tee shot to clear the water and avoid the cliff face. Honored specifically by Golf Digest.

What to Expect

Two distinct experiences in one round. The front nine plays as a links-style layout with deep bunkers, sloping greens, and open terrain. The back nine drops into the quarry — surrounded by 200-foot limestone walls, a central lake, and dramatic elevation changes creating a completely different visual atmosphere.

The quarry walls create an amphitheater effect making the back nine feel like playing inside a geological monument. Par 71, approximately 6,740 yards.

Public access at $45-90 — one of the most visually unique courses in American golf.

Playing Tips

Wind swirls unpredictably inside the quarry walls on the back nine — even when the flag appears still, wind catches your ball at its apex.

Avoid the bunkers at all costs on the back nine. Precision ball placement matters more than distance inside the quarry.

The front nine rewards aggressive play; the back nine demands accuracy. Adjust your strategy at the turn.

The quarry amphitheater is spectacular — enjoy it but stay focused on the golf.
